The launch of the first variant of this model takes place with two engines that equip the Boxster and Cayman models produced until 08/2018 identically, and which are marketed all over the world with an exhaust line downstream of the turbo equipped with the catalytic converter only.
A 1,998 cc engine, which features in the standard versions, from 300 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, and a 2,497 cc engine, destined for the S version, from 350 horsepower at 6,500 rpm.
The public’s feedback is conflicting: if in terms of performance the car guarantees everything a Porsche must have, the feel with the engine is not always the best: the sound of the 4-cylinder boxster does not satisfy many customers.
The exhaust system is as follows, characterized by a single catalytic converter placed at the turbine outlet, which shortly after splits into a Y, inserting the silencer elements at the ends of these two individual branches.
The gases coming out of the two silencers then converge in a common exhaust tail, available in single or double pipe variants, with different finishes available.
Porsche offers the opportunity to improve the sound thanks to the classic optional PSE, the Porsche Sports Exhaust, which introduces a pneumatic valve on the right branch of the exhaust system, controlled by the control unit in a variable mode by pressing the sport button in the passenger compartment.
The valve intrdouced block the exhaust gas flow inside right exhaust line. This action creates a counter-pressure that creates a single flow that pass through the left side, with a not optimal fluid dynamic situtaion of the catback system.
This first generation remains unchanged in production until today in all markets where the GPF particulate filter has not been introduced, typically the whole world except Europe. For this first generation, Tubi Style offers different solutions:
The racing catalyst replaces the original catalyst with a racing component with a smaller number of cells, and a consequent improved permeability that drastically reduces the exhaust back pressure.
This solution is perfectly interchangeable with the original components, and is specific for use on the track and not approved for road use. The solution allows you to increase and improve the sound of the car, but there are some key points to take into consideration:
The use of a sports catalyst creates the conditions for an increase in power, but its correct installation and full exploitation of its potential require a contestual ECU remapping performed by a professional.
Two kits of mufflers are proposed, specific for use on the track and not approved for road use, and perfectly interchangeable with the standard components.
For an aesthetic customization, the specific TubiStyle tailpipes are in black colour and with a diameter increased to 94 mm.
All the components listed so far can be purchased individually to be coupled with the original components, or to form a single Tubi Style exhaust line, even at a later stage: starting with only the mufflers and tail pipes in the period covered by the guarantee, to then conclude the upgrade with the racing catalyst and the remapping at a later time.
The exhaust line includes the catalytic converter, and a valve, in which the; silencing element is obtained through a reduced section valve by-pass duct.
It is offered in two variants:
Mode 1 – the valve is always closed. is the default mode, which is reactivated each time the machine is switched on
Mode 2 – the valve is always open
Mode 3 – the valve opens only in case of strong acceleration or deceleration, related to sporty driving. If you return to a standard guide for more than ten seconds, the valve closes again
Mode 4 – the valve opens only on release
If this exhaust with electric valve is mounted on a vehicle equipped with PSE, obviously the control of the valve via the Sport button will no longer work, as it will be replaced by the control in the 4 modes described above.
In combination with this muffler, it is necessary to buy the Tubi Style specific tailpipes, available in different aesthetic finishes.
At the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, Porsche engines introduce the GPF, the particulate filter in Europe and other markets. The GPF is inserted in series with the catalytic converter, in a single body, whose varying dimensions and functionality require a variation of this component compared to its predecessor, only in markets where the use of this component is envisaged. Therefore, the silencers and exhaust tailpipes remain unchanged, for a modification that is almost invisible to buyers, except for a more “capped” sound, and an almost imperceptible reduction in the maximum torque range.
Commercially, this engine update coincides with the launch of the 718 Porsche Boxster T and Cayman T, a sporty variant that recalls the Touring model launched in 1968, more essential and with sportier trim and calibrations.
As we have explained on the original exhaust system, in all markets including the USA, in which the variant with a particulate filter has not been introduced, all the solutions supplied by Tubi Style for the previous period remain valid on all models, including the new Touring variant.
For the variants equipped with GPF to date we have not yet developed a dedicated catalytic converter solution, so our catalogue offers only solutions as:
Two kits of mufflers are proposed, specific for use on the track and not approved for road use, and perfectly interchangeable with the standard components.
For an aesthetic customization, the specific TubiStyle tailpipes are in black colour and with a diameter increased to 94 mm.
Although there has been an ongoing commitment by Porsche to optimize the 718 four-cylinder product, which is a very pleasant and, in many ways, unrivaled sports car in its class, part of the Porsche public remains skeptical about the model. On the one hand for the introduction of the Turbo, on the other hand for the reduction of the displacement in favor of a 4-cylinder often considered too “poor”.
Porsche responds to this type of customer by launching the extreme GT4 version in 2019, which becomes the basis of a line of cars equipped with a 6-cylinder 4.0 immediately very welcome to the public, which gives a convincing response of excellence to this new proposal: these are the Porsche 718 Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS in the new 4.0L engine, the iconic 718 Cayman GT4 and the beautiful 718 Spyder.
The exhaust systems for the 2.0L and 2.5L turbo engines remain unchanged, as well as the offers described above for customizing the Tubi Style exhaust systems.
On the 4.0L, on the other hand, a new exhaust system is developed that develops on two separate exhaust tracts, one per bank, with the catalytic converter integrated into the exhaust manifold, a technical solution in continuity with the older sister 911 GT3.
The GPF Particulate Filters are positioned in the pipe that joins the muffler to the catalytic converters, near the muffler, which offers a one-piece solution with double pneumatic valves at the silencer inlet.
This exhaust solution is certainly more refined and suitable for the high-performance car model, but more difficult to manage in the aftermarket world.
The muffler alone then differs according to the type of model:
ATTENTION – the silent block solution was introduced on cars produced starting from March 2020, and also introduced on GT4 and Spyder, but is not reflected in the official technical documentation. For this reason, before ordering the product, a visit to your trusted installer is required to check which muffler is actually installed in the car.
The Tubi Style catalogue offers two different solutions for this model
GPF removal pipes should be used in markets where this is provided. The adoption of this system is not compliant for road use, and is dedicated to track use only. Removing the GPF causes the engine warning light to come on, and the indications we have given on the matter remain valid: on the other hand, on the naturally aspirated engine, the decrease in exhaust back pressure improves general performance, with a significant increase in torque and power, improving also the sound of the car, which is much fuller in this way.
The muffler is a straight pipe solution, not approved for road use and specific for track events, which is divided into two variants depending on the mounting methods:
Tubi Style wants to further enhance the range offered to 718 customers, and plans to develop the racing catalytic converters with removal of the particulate filter for 2.0L and 2.5L cars equipped with GPF, and the exhaust manifolds with racing catalytic converters for cars with 4L engines.
